Here are our top tips for planning a DIY Baby Shower.
Choose a good Baby Shower theme…
Some Baby Shower themes are better suited to DIY. For example, one of our favorite Baby Shower themes is Tea Party. This can be easily put together using your own china, flowers from your garden and your Mom’s lace tablecloth.
If you are the crafty type, then Mama to Bee is a superb theme! Spoil the Mama to Bee with honey cake, lemonade, and a pretty yellow color scheme. In addition, use vintage glasses and crockery to set the table, and decorate with yellow daisies in jars.
Another great DIY Baby Shower theme is Boho. Go for pretty florals, lace tablecloths, flowers and a laid back vibe for this fashionable theme.
Also, we love a Peter Rabbit Baby Shower theme! It’s super cute and relatively easy to set up. Use vegetables and carrots as a table display and flowers in small jars with decorative rabbits scattered amongst them.

Once you’ve picked a theme, create cute invitations that set the tone. Websites like Canva make it super easy to design personalized invites. For big savings, switch out pricey, printed invitations (that you may need to post) for instant downloads that you can customize and email to your guests. Easy and budget-conscious!!
Decorations…
For a DIY Baby Shower, one area where you can really go to town is the decorations. Above all, let your creativity shine and really set the scene for the Shower.
When planning a Baby Shower, where possible, try to use things that you already have (or can borrow from friends).
For a Vintage Tea Party theme or a Boho theme, your Mom or Grandma’s cupboards are a great place to look for vintage china, cake stands, napkins and tablecloths. The beauty of these themes is it doesn’t need to match, the more mismatched the prettier the effect! Also, charity shops can also be a great place to rummage for vintage serving platters, plates, dishes, and glassware.
Balloons are a great way to add color and impact to your setting and are super cheap. Fill them with helium and weigh them down to add height to your table. Find flowers and greenery from your own garden (or a friends) and display in small jars or empty glass containers or cups. Then, lay sprigs of greenery down the center of the table to create a gorgeous centerpiece for free! DIY Baby Shower decorations are a great way to save on your Baby Shower. Head over to your local craft store and stock up on DIY essentials like balloons, streamers, and banners. Personalize them to match your chosen theme. If you’re feeling extra creative, consider making your own centerpieces or a handmade backdrop for photos.
Baby Shower Food
Your Guests don’t require a large meal, but a Baby Shower usually has a light food offering for Guests.
Finger food is perfect and I always think a Tea Party theme is very easy to do. Finger sandwiches with simple fillings, a homemade cake, and scones with jam and cream make for an upmarket party but with inexpensive ingredients. In addition, this menu also works really well for a Boho theme or Garden Party theme.
Other great Baby Shower food options are:
- Homemade pizzas
- Mini Hot dogs
- Homemade savory muffins
- Vegetable crudités and dip
- Potato wedges
- Homemade cookies
- Homemade cupcakes
Drinks
It’s nice to have the drink option to match the theme. For example, at a Mama to Bee party, a lemon or honey-based drink works really well. At a Boho themed party, iced tea with mint leaves and fruit is really pretty. Meanwhile, for a traditional tea party, English Breakfast tea is perfect!

If you plan to play some Baby Shower card games like Baby Bingo, buy downloadable games that you can print out yourself. Then you can just print the amount that you need for your party. No need to buy a pack of 50 games cards when you only have 10 guests!
However, there are heaps of other games that you can play that don’t need any game cards.

Keepsake Book or Wishing Tree
Set up a station where guests can leave their well wishes, advice, or special memories for the mom-to-be and baby. This can be in the form of a keepsake book or a wishing tree with adorable tags for guests to write on.
Baby Shower Favors
It is always fun to give out Baby Shower favors at the end of a Baby Shower to thank your guests for coming.
In addition, it’s nice to tie in the favor to the theme if you can and add a personalized thank you tag.
These are our favorite DIY Baby Shower favor options:
- A miniature posy of flowers with a handwritten thank you note attached.
- A homemade cupcake in a mini cardboard box.
- A homemade gingerbread cookie in a clear bag. Use a fun “baby” shaped cutter like a pacifier or a bodysuit.
- Also a mini bag of homemade candies, for example, peppermint creams, fudge or coconut ice make great options.
Also, if you have a Mom/ Grandmother / Aunt or lovely friend who is a keen baker, you could always ask for their help with the favors. In truth, many would be thrilled to be able to help out and produce something special for the Mama to Be.
